Co-President Rachel Pyle (She/her/Hers). Rachel spent the 5 years prior to law school doing affordable housing work in Sacramento. As a result, she worked in affirmative housing defense for her 1L summer at the SF legal aid firm Open Door Legal. As a graduate of UC Davis she loves biking around and park picnics.
Delphine Burns (she/her/hers), Vice President of HPILF. Delphine is a 2L who is deeply passionate about ensuring that marginalized communities have access to effective legal representation. Delphine is specifically passionate about serving survivors of sexual violence and gender-based discrimination. Prior to pursuing a legal education, Delphine worked as an advocate for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. This past summer, Delphine worked at a small civil rights law firm specializing in fighting gender discrimination in the workplace and in schools. Delphine also serves on the CARE advisory board and is on the Hastings Moot Court team. In her spare time, Delphine enjoys singing and playing guitar, and spoiling her cat Shady.
Isa Velez is our Co-Vice President. She grew up in Petaluma, California. She is a 2L who attended Reed College before coming to UC Law SF. Isa is interested in plaintiff's work for racial and economic justice; employment law; social justice; legal aid.
Treasurer Bob Chan (he/his/him). Bob is from San Ysidro, California and graduated from UCLA, double majoring in Political Science and History with a minor in Global Studies. He is a 2L who is interested in criminal law. Bob is also the President of the UC Hastings Basketball Club, Student Leader in the Legal Advice and Referral Clinic, Staff Editor on the Hastings Law Journal, and is interning this upcoming summer at the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. In his spare time, he cares for his five houseplants, enjoys going on jogs, spending time with his two sisters, and watching college football/basketball.
My name is KJ, and I am excited to serve as one of the HPILF Gala Co-Chairs this year. As a 2L, I joined HPILF to help other students pursue careers in public interest law. Biography I grew up primarily in Washington state and moved to San Diego when I was 14. I then attended UC Davis as a pre-dental student and graduated in 2015 with a degree in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. Upon graduating, I realized I wasn't enthusiastic about attending dental school, so I changed gears and worked as a life insurance agent for several years. When COVID hit, I pivoted careers again and decided to attend law school because a legal career matched my interests and natural strengths. Law school has been a great experience, and I'm glad I chose to attend UC Law SF. Interests Thanks to my legal internship and the classes I have taken in law school, I am primarily interested in military and business law. Last summer, I interned for the US Coast Guard in Seattle, WA. It was an excellent learning experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Coast Guard attorneys on substantive legal projects that meaningfully impacted others. Thanks to my positive experiences in Seattle, I would love to intern for the Coast Guard again this summer. Goals In the future, I want to attend business school (either concurrently with law school or separately once I earn my JD) because I want to work in either management consulting or investment banking. Nonetheless, military law is still an enticing field of practice for me. To thread the needle between these starkly different fields after graduation, I would like to pursue a full-time career in consulting or investment banking and a part-time career as a JAG (military attorney).
Kenna Fung (she/her), our Gala Co-chair. Kenna is from San Francisco, California, and graduated from the University of California, Irvine, majoring in Political Science. She is a 2L who is interested in environmental law. Kenna is involved with Hastings Environmental Law Journal and is a public interest mentor. In her spare time, she enjoys going on hikes, playing video games, and exploring new restaurants around the Bay Area.
Our Director of Communications is Grant Schwall (He/Him/His). Grant from Sebastopol CA, and is a 2L interested in indigent defense. He attended Gonzaga University for undergrad, majoring in Spanish and Political Science. He worked last summer at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, and will return there this summer. Outside of school, Grant is a basketball referee for local high schools.
Nick Dias is the HPILF Director of Development. He is a 2L interested in criminal defense. Born and raised in San Francisco, he went to UCSB where he double majored in history and political science. Last summer he interned at prisoner legal services, acting as an advocate for incarcerated individuals. Next summer he will continue this advocacy with the San Francisco Public Defenders office. An avid runner, Nick enjoys to spend his free time watching the raiders lose every weekend, and watching the warriors fail to cultivate their young core.
